What makes a pitcher "high-performance"?
Standard pitchers (NSF/ANSI 42 only) remove chlorine and improve taste — nothing more. High-performance pitchers carry NSF/ANSI 53 certification for specific health contaminants: lead, PFAS, or both. This is the certification that matters.
- NSF/ANSI 53 — Lead: independently verified lead reduction
- NSF/ANSI 473 — PFAS: independently verified reduction of PFOA, PFOS, and other PFAS
- NSF/ANSI 42: taste, odor, and chlorine reduction (baseline for all pitchers)
- NSF/ANSI 372: lead-free filter housing and components
Pitchers retain beneficial fluoride, calcium, and magnesium — unlike RO systems. No installation required. Filter cartridges replaced approximately every 2–3 months.
Pitcher filters remove protective chlorine from your tap water. Without chlorine, bacteria and mold can grow in the reservoir — especially in warm kitchens. A UV wand (~$35) disinfects the reservoir in 30–60 seconds.
Recommended: SteriPen Aqua UV (~$35–$45) | Germ Guardian UV Wand (~$25–$40)
Premium alternative: LARQ PureVis Pitcher (~$130) — built-in auto UV-C, no wand needed
